To practice as a travel nurse in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), you must obtain licensure from the appropriate regulatory body based on your nursing designation. The province has implemented recent changes to streamline the licensing process, particularly for internationally educated nurses.

Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs):

To work as a travel nurse in Newfoundland and Labrador, you must be licensed through the College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL) or the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CLPNNL) depending on your designation:

  • Registered Nurses (RNs)

  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs)

The College of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CRNNL) oversees the licensure of RNs and NPs. In 2023, amendments to the Registered Nurses Regulations were introduced to expedite the registration and licensing process for internationally educated nurses. These changes include the establishment of a Designated Countries Pathway, allowing nurses from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, India, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland to apply for licensure more efficiently. The time required to complete an educational assessment for applicants from these countries has been reduced from over a year to as little as four weeks.

The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (CLPNNL) is responsible for licensing LPNs. Prospective LPNs should apply directly to the CLPNNL for licensure.

General Requirements:

All applicants must hold a valid nursing license in the province and possess valid Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant documentation.
