Nova Scotia Travel Nurse Regulations

Join Canada’s East Coast healthcare workforce through flexible, high-demand travel nurse placements across Nova Scotia. Whether you're a seasoned Canadian nurse or internationally educated, Wamutonga Healthcare Services is here to guide you every step of the way.

Licensing Requirements – Nova Scotia:

To work as a travel nurse in Nova Scotia, you must be licensed by the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN). This regulatory body licenses:

  • Registered Nurses (RNs)

  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)

  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs)

We support you in meeting NSCN’s requirements so you can begin your assignment with confidence.

Professional Practice Standards:
Travel nurses are expected to practice within the scope of their licensure and follow NSCN’s standards of practice and code of ethics. Nurses are accountable for maintaining professional competence and delivering safe, ethical, and client-centred care in accordance with Nova Scotia's regulatory framework.

For Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs):
If you obtained your nursing education and licensure outside of Canada, you must apply for conditional registration and licensure through NSCN. This process includes:

  • Apply for conditional registration with NSCN

  • Submit credentials for assessment

  • Demonstrate English language proficiency (if required)

  • Complete any additional assessments or bridging programs as needed

IENs may also be required to undergo a bridging or orientation program depending on their qualifications and experience.

Recent Regulatory Updates (Effective December 15, 2023):

  •  Assignment Duration:  Maximum of 180 days when working with Nova Scotia Health, IWK Health, or any publicly funded long-term care facility

  •  Re-employment Gap:  After 180 days, a 12-month waiting period is required before returning for another travel assignment with those employers

  • Permanent Placement Option: Nurses are welcome to apply for full-time or permanent roles in Nova Scotia at any time

Why Choose Nova Scotia?

  • Breathtaking coastal landscapes & charming communities

  • Competitive compensation packages

  • Opportunities to build long-term careers or enjoy flexible short-term assignments

  • A supportive healthcare network welcoming to local and international nurses
