In Ontario, travel nurses must adhere to specific regulations to practice legally and safely. Key requirements include:

Licensing Requirements:

Travel nurses must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), the regulatory body for Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario.

Professional Practice Standards:

Scope of Practice: Travel nurses in Ontario are required to practice within their authorized scope, as defined by the CNO’s standards of practice, professional guidelines, and code of conduct.

For Internationally Educated Nurses:

If you completed your nursing education and licensing outside of Canada, you must apply for registration with the CNO. This includes submitting your credentials for assessment through the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS), meeting language proficiency requirements (if applicable), and fulfilling other regulatory criteria.

Recent Regulatory Guidance:

While Ontario does not currently impose formal limits on the length of employment for travel nurses, healthcare employers may have individual policies regarding contract duration and re-employment eligibility. Travel nurses are encouraged to review terms with each facility and consult with the CNO to ensure ongoing compliance with licensing and practice standards.

Compliance with the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA): Nursing is among Ontario's 27 regulated health professions governed by the RHPA. This act ensures that health professionals provide services safely, professionally, and ethically.

Licensing of Temporary Nursing Agencies: The Temporary Nursing Agency Licensing and Regulation Act, 2023, mandates that operators of temporary nursing agencies obtain a license to operate in Ontario. This act introduces licensing requirements, including the submission of credentialing and compliance plans, and imposes conditions on work assignments and recruitment practices. By fulfilling these requirements, travel nurses can ensure they practice in compliance with Ontario's regulatory standards.
